Art Exploration
Explore the possibilities of visual art in a fun community of your peers. Gain new skills to express yourself in 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional art while learning the fundamentals of design in an open studio setting. No prior experience required, just a hands-on attitude. Projects will include drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Creative Writing/Short Stories
This class will provide strategies for students to develop and hone creative and short-story writing skills. Students will learn a wide range of pre-writing, brainstorming, and organizational strategies, the basics of developing tone and point of view, and techniques to add flair to their writing style. Through close, individualized conferencing with the instructor and a series of focused peer-review workshops, students will have the opportunity to develop, revise, edit, and share several original pieces of writing.

Computer Skills
Using in class instruction in conjunction with online learning, this class will explore the world of the digital native. The class will focus on popular applications such as the Microsoft Office suite, as well as multi-media design, and social software. We will be discussing Internet safety and putting our safe knowledge into practice. The class is hands-on and project based in nature.

Dance
In this course, students will explore a wide range of dance styles and techniques including: Salsa, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, and Hip-Hop. Choreography and composition will explore space, time, force, and energy in both symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations. The extended applications of this creative process will produce students who will be able to create and perform an ample variety of dance styles.

Debate
Good debaters must be strong researchers, quick thinkers and passionate speakers. In fact, learning to debate is one of the most important (and fun!) skills you can develop for your future career. After a refresher of some basic public speaking skills, the class will migrate to an introduction of formal debate rules and research techniques. From there, students will practice constructing arguments with logical reasoning and sound evidence which will culminate in formal debates against their peers. Ready, set, argue!

Film Making
Students will take part in creating a storyboard for their film that will guide them as they shoot. The process of shooting will involve using locations around campus, inviting actors to join scenes, and using the school’s film equipment respectfully and responsibly. The footage will be fully edited; adding music, titles, and special effects to enhance their creative storytelling. Then the final product will be presented in a screening at the end of each session!

Forensic Science

Art Exploration
Explore the possibilities of visual art in a fun community of your peers. Gain new skills to express yourself in 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional art while learning the fundamentals of design in an open studio setting. No prior experience required, just a hands-on attitude. Projects will include drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Connected Mathematics
Calling all curious math students who are interested in discovering the world of mathematics beyond the typical drill and practice. Students will launch head first into problems involving data and statistics, mathematical modeling, and exponential growth and decay as they learn to make connections between real-world problems and the mathematics used to solve them. This course is highly recommended for students who already have strong computational skills as it will provide them with the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills as well. All math pioneers are welcome!

Are you a big fan of TV shows like CSI and Forensic Files? Learn the crime scene basics and procedures criminal investigators use to solve crimes. A variety of forensic science techniques will be introduced as you gather and analyze evidence with the aim of identifying possible suspects. The course is a hands-on, team-based approach that includes analysis of handwriting, fingerprints, hair, fibers, and powders.

Math I
This course provides basic math review for students entering pre-algebra. Topics covered include basic operations, decimals, fractions, percentages, rounding, scientific notation, order of operations, multiples, factors, exponents, square roots, absolute value, and positive and negative integers. There will also be an introduction to simple algebra.

Project Runway 101
Grades: 9 – 12

Beginning with a brief history of the system of physical actions, as conceived by Konstantin Stanislavski and further developed by Jerzy Grotowski and others, this course will define the basic principles of physical acting, including physical action, mental action, mind and body connection, partner interaction, tempo-rhythm, verbal action, physical characterization, and total action. Students will learn how to confront questions and elevate acting to an art form. Due to the physical nature of this training, students will be required to wear appropriate clothing (t-shirts, shorts, sweats, etc.) and keep a journal. This course fulfills one semester of art credit at Brentwood School. This course does NOT fulfill the prerequisite for the Brentwood Theater Company.

This camp functions around the idea that summer soccer camp should be enjoyable but directed at teaching skills conducive to the game. This camp provides younger players with a fun introduction to the game and skill based technical sessions with a focus on passing, dribbling, and trapping. Morning sessions will emphasize touches on the ball and repetition of the skills. These sessions will lead to smaller games incorporating the skill of the day. During the lunch hour, we will watch clips from World Cup games. The days will conclude with games that focus on basic positions.

David began playing soccer at the age of six. A four time state champion in high school, he played competitively at the division I collegiate level for Davidson College in North Carolina. He started coaching while still in high school, helping his own high school coach with the younger school teams, as well as coaching a U-12 boys group. While playing in college, he coached a local club team. He has always balanced his teaching load with coaching soccer, and has coached both at the varsity and junior varsity level (as well as Brentwood’s first ever Lower Division 6th grade team), boys and girls. His Brentwood girl’s teams have had both league and CIF success, and many of his players have continued on to play collegiately. He has run the Brentwood summer soccer camp for the last five years, and before that worked camps for Davidson College, the Dallas Tornado (NASL), the Dallas Sidekicks (MISL), Durham Academy, and Duke University.
